Volunteer Opportunities

We’re looking for volunteers to help with our turn at the Beaverton School District Clothes Closet on May 8th, for a couple of volunteers to take on the Volunteer Coordinator role, and for some new committee chairs for the next school year.

Please read below for details.

Clothes Closet Day

The Beaverton School District Clothes Closet offers free clothing to students throughout the year. Each school is asked to provide volunteers to help run the program. It is a very rewarding experience to be able to help these families. Please consider volunteering for a shift on our assigned day, Wednesday May 8 anytime between 9:30-4:30 pm. Use THIS LINK  to sign up. If you can’t make an assigned shift, please contact kelli@rbros.com.

PTC Board Position – Volunteer Coordinator

All the PTC Board positions for next year have applicants except for the Volunteer Coordinator position.  This position is crucial for communicating with volunteers and working with classroom representatives and committee chairs.  The position would be best for two volunteers to share the duties.  The main duties are:

  • Accepting new volunteers in the volunteer system, emailing those volunteers and creating name badges
  • Entering/updating volunteer opportunities in the volunteer system with the help of teachers, classroom representatives and committee chairs
  • Contacting committee chairs prior to events to assess volunteer needs
  • Attend monthly PTC and PTC Board meetings and participate in the board discussions and decisions
  • Attend Volunteer Orientation in the fall and Kindergarten Orientation in the spring
2019 – 2020 Committee Chairs

To date, we know we need new Committee Chairs for the events below:

  • Field Day – you would have an opportunity to shadow this year’s chair at the event on Friday, June 7th.
  • Back to School Night – help organize the festivities as families come to school to drop off supplies and meet their teachers.

Learn more on the Volunteer Page.

Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Rick Collett, at volunteers@terralindaptc.org if you need further information

The Science Fair and Art Blast come together for another fabulous STEAM Night this year. This fun evening of exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics will be held on Friday, April 12 from 6-8 pm. All Terra Linda families are encouraged to attend even if your student did not enter a Science Fair or Art Blast project.

STEAM Night will include:

  • Students’ science fair experiments on display
  • OMSI presentations throughout the night
  • Art Blast that will have student art projects on display. The theme this year is “How do you celebrate nature?”
  • Usborne Books & More, Book Fair
  • Hands-on inquiry stations in a variety of disciplines
The MakerSpace will be open on STEAM Night and everyone is encouraged to come and check it out. There will be a collection bin for the following items if you would like to donate.
  • Legos (do not need to be new)
  • Play-Doh
  • Dry Erase Markers
  • Regular Scissors
  • Construction Paper
  • Cotton Balls

Art Blast!

It’s time to get creative for Art Blast! Our theme this year is “How Do You Celebrate Nature?!” Students are asked to make art interpreting this theme. Are you inspired by plants? Your animals? A local landscape? Capture your inspiration on paper for us!

Please turn in artwork to your teacher by April 10th. A form was sent home for students to fill out a title tag for their work. This form can also be downloaded HERE.  Art Blast is the evening of Friday April 12th 6-8PM. We will display students’ work & have fun projects for them to do! We hope everyone can join us to celebrate the creativity coming from our very own students!

Green Team

The Terra Linda Green Team encourages families to celebrate Earth Day, April 22, by making one small eco-friendly change. Here are a couple of ideas, but don’t limit yourself to these! You can find more than you can imagine online.

  • Already switched to reusable grocery bags? Take the next step with reusable produce bags!
  • Walk, bike, or scoot to school or an errand once a week.
  • Line dry your clothes on sunny days. Nothing smells better than sheets dried in the sun!
  • Plant a vegetable garden, even if it is just one tomato plant in a pot. There is something magical about a kiddo eating something immediately after picking it.
  • Dedicate one night a week as Leftover Night in order to reduce food waste.
  • When you stock up on sunscreen for the summer, choose a coral-safe brand.
  • Limit shower length to 5 minutes.
  • Cook one meat-free dinner per week.
  • Ready to do some serious spring cleaning? Try making your own cleaning supplies. They are inexpensive and good for the earth.
  • Turn off or unplug all electronics unless they are actively being used.

Just think of the impact we could make in our Terra Linda community if we all commit to just one change!

Teachers will have chosen books they would like to have in their classroom and set them aside behind the cashier. When purchasing your own books at the fair, you can also chose to contribute additional money, in any amount, that will be used to buy books for the school.

Book Fair Online

Online shopping for the fair offers an expanded selection of books for all ages. Online shopping runs until 2/5. Any books ordered online can ship to the school for free and we’ll get them to you or you can pay to ship to an address.

The online fair is a great way to get a book that we don’t have at the fair, or one that sold out. Books purchased online still count towards additional books for the school.

NOTE: The site has a School Wish List, however the books listed are a default list from Scholastic and do not reflect what the school would like. Please visit the fair at school if you would like to purchase and donate books to classrooms.  Thank you.

The fair will be open Tuesday, January 29th  – Friday, February 1st in the school library at the times below:

Before school 8:10am – 8:30am

  • Recess/Lunch time 10:45am – 12:30pm
  • After school Tue, Thur, Fri 3:05pm – 3:30pm, Wed, 1:35pm – 2:00pm
  • It is also open during the Sock Hop Dance on Friday, February 1st from 5:45pm – 8:00pm

When visiting the book fair in the morning, parents and guardians must sign in and get a visitor badge from the office.

Look for the book fair flyer in Thursday folders on 1/24.

The Book Fair is a wonderful opportunity to share your love of reading with your whole class by donating a book to your student’s classroom. Teachers will have chosen books they would like to have in their classroom and set them aside behind the cashier. When purchasing your own books at the fair, you can also chose to contribute additional money, in any amount, that will be used to buy books for the school.

Please contact Book Fair Chair, Rick Collett at bookfair@terralindaptc.org with questions.

The PTC is completely volunteer run!

Each PTC Board Position commitment is for one year. A person may serve in the same position for a maximum of two consecutive years.

The following board positions will be open for next school year (2019-2020)

If you are interested in becoming a board member, please see the position description/duties in our Bylaws and contact the current Volunteer Coordinator to share you interest.

Ideally, those interested should reach out now so they can shadow existing board members to learn more about the position during the current school year.

Makerspace: UPDATE

Special thanks to our technology assistant Nicole Jackson, and parent volunteers, Kelly Olson, John Schaeffer, Gavin Redshaw.

The Makerspace is finally up and running!

Mrs. Batsell introduced the area to the staff during a staff meeting last Tuesday and later in the week Terra Linda’s, SALT Lego Robotics team presented their project and demonstrated their robot on the Makerspace’s own Lego robotics field table.

The room has craft supplies as well as STEM learning tools, so children should be able to use the space for everything from expressing their creativity by making things like greeting cards, to programming robots or making videos.

This is an evolving project and we are so excited to be able to bring this resource to your children.

Jog-A-Thon Corporate Sponsorships

If you have not completed your paperwork to receive corporate matching for any 2018 donations to the PTC (Jog-A-Thon or otherwise) please take the time to do that ASAP. It is easy money that helps all our students.  Questions?  email: vpfundraising@terralindaptc.org

PizzicatoDining for Dollars

Next Event: Cornell Pizzicato 1/15/19 from 11AM-9PM.

Terra Linda will receive 20% off ALL purchases throughout the entire day–no flyer necessary.  Gift cards are also included!  The restaurant is VERY small, so call ahead orders for take out or delivery are recommended.

If you are unable to attend that day, you can pre-order gift card purchases through Becky Seppala by emailing your requested amount by 1/10/19. The gift cards will be distributed following the event. They have also offered to include any corporate orders throughout the day purchased at ANY Pizzicato location. If this is something you’re interested in, please contact Becky.

ALSO… Pizzicato will be choosing one of our student’s recipe creations for their “special” pizza that day to honor Terra Linda.  Please have your child complete the Budding Chef Recipe Form and send by 1/7/19 if they are interested.  The winner will be announced before the event. Any inquiries or email submissions regarding this event may be sent to beckyseppala@gmail.com.

PTC Meeting

Do you have questions about the Health Curriculum?

Plan to attend the PTC meeting on January 8 at 6:30pm when we will provide time to answer questions about Erin’s Law and the four sexual abuse prevention lessons that will be taught between late January and April. You can find the lessons listed by grade level on fightchildabuse.org. The requirement of Erin’s Law is four lessons a year at each grade level, K-12.
