Green Team Update

Not sure where to take your hard to recycle plastic items? One option is the Maker Studio at the Portland Children’s Museum. You don’t have to be a member to drop items off, they will accept them at the front desk. Here is a full list of what they accept: https://www.portlandcm.org/exhibits/maker-studio

Makerspace

In the traditional sense, November is a time of thankfulness on a good autumn harvest.  These two words – Thankful and Harvest – will be this month’s inspiring theme to the craft creations in the Makerspace room.  Starting mid-month during your child’s next Technology Special, please inquire on what they created and if they enjoyed the free use of the materials stocked up in the room! To help replenish our stock of items, please see a list on the Terra Linda Makerspace Wishlist.  Items that will be helpful for this month are googly eyes, feathers, pom poms, small autumn leaves and glitter paint. Donations of any size or quantity will be appreciated.  Please drop items off at the Terra Linda office and mention they are for the Makerspace room. Interested in helping the kids make their creations with Terra Linda Technology Educator, Rishika Batheja?  Or have ideas to share for future activities?  Please contact Maria Schaeffer at makerspace@terralindaptc.org

Buy Local. Support Terra Linda.

Piccolo Mondo Toys in Bethany Village is partnering with Terra Linda November 11th-17th.  During that week, anytime you shop there, just mention Terra Linda, and they will donate 15% of your total purchase to our school! The holidays will be sneaking up on us soon–maybe get a jump start on shopping, all while supporting Terra Linda! (For more details, please see the flyer that was sent home with your student this week.)

Cast your VOTE

The Beaverton School Board on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 unanimously adopted a resolution to place a five-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election.

If approved, the Local Option Levy Renewal would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year.

In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton’s elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools. The current levy pays for five full time teachers at Terra Linda.

Please join us for our next PTC Meeting this Wednesday, 10/4, at 7:00pm in the Terra Linda Library!

We’re changing the format of the PTC meetings a little bit. We’d like to send out the agenda and updates ahead of time, so everyone can see the topics. The updates will not be discussed, in the meeting, unless parents/staff have questions. We’re hoping this will help streamline the meetings and keep them to an hour. It should also free up some time to have guest speakers.

You can check out the PTC Meeting Agenda here:

Terra Linda PTC Meeting Agenda October 4 2017

At this month’s meeting, we’re excited to have Kristy Edmunds and Christy Batsell as our guest speakers…

Growing Our Readers

Last spring, Reading Specialist Kristy Edmunds trained volunteers how to read with first graders by explaining what skills and strategies students needed at each reading level.  All the parents said, “I wish I would have known this sooner for our own children!”

Kristy Edmunds and Christy Batsell will share this same information, but expanded to all grade levels. Learn how students move up in reading levels from Kindergarten “Read to Me” through 5th grade “Orange” and beyond. Hear how our teachers support students in this progression and take home some strategies to use with your own children.
