Makerspace

Since the beginning of the school year, the volunteers in the Makerspace room have enjoyed witnessing and supporting the joy we see when the students have an idea for a project and they successfully create it. Much of their creations have been with cardboard.  The photo above is evidence of that as their cardboard projects are kept on the side to improve on when they visit back. With its popularity as the top choice of material use, our stock of cardboard is running low. We request donations for cardboard at any size and quantity to continue the fun through to the end of the school year. Along with that, any supporting items that compliment with cardboard-building will be well-appreciated:

  • cardboard cutters
  • mini glue sticks
  • hot glue guns
  • marbles
  • tape

Our Terra Linda Makerspace Wishlist items are now updated, so please consider reviewing the list.  Please drop items off at the Terra Linda office and mention they are for the Makerspace room. A big thanks to the recent donors of craft supplies for the Makerspace room.  On this current Makerspace activity of building squishy circuits, we want to thank a surge of parents/ community members who donated their time either by making homemade conductive playdough or participating in the classroom. Interested in helping the kids make their creations with Terra Linda Technology Educator, Rishika Batheja?  Or have ideas to share for future activities?  Please contact Maria Schaeffer at makerspace@terralindaptc.org

Dining For Dollar$

You can set up an eWallet for your student now using information found on our Terra Linda Book Fair page.

January 30th…

  • 1848 – 1st gold nugget found in Coloma, CA launching the California Gold Rush
  • 1968 – Beginning of the Tet Offensive in Vietnam
  • 1969 – The Beatles give their last public performance
  • 1951 – Phil Collins is born.
  • 2020 – This BLAST is published

What does it all mean? A nonsensical collection of random events put together after 10 minutes of googling “January 30th”? Perhaps. Or perhaps this is the key to finally unlocking the secret to [REDACTED].

Shocking, right? But it’s better to know the truth.

Would you like to get more out of the blast? Do you have suggestions? Please contact Nicholas at communication@terralindaptc.org with any feedback.

Volunteer Opportunities

We’re looking for volunteers to help with our turn at the Beaverton School District Clothes Closet on May 8th, for a couple of volunteers to take on the Volunteer Coordinator role, and for some new committee chairs for the next school year.

Please read below for details.

Clothes Closet Day

The Beaverton School District Clothes Closet offers free clothing to students throughout the year. Each school is asked to provide volunteers to help run the program. It is a very rewarding experience to be able to help these families. Please consider volunteering for a shift on our assigned day, Wednesday May 8 anytime between 9:30-4:30 pm. Use THIS LINK  to sign up. If you can’t make an assigned shift, please contact kelli@rbros.com.

PTC Board Position – Volunteer Coordinator

All the PTC Board positions for next year have applicants except for the Volunteer Coordinator position.  This position is crucial for communicating with volunteers and working with classroom representatives and committee chairs.  The position would be best for two volunteers to share the duties.  The main duties are:

  • Accepting new volunteers in the volunteer system, emailing those volunteers and creating name badges
  • Entering/updating volunteer opportunities in the volunteer system with the help of teachers, classroom representatives and committee chairs
  • Contacting committee chairs prior to events to assess volunteer needs
  • Attend monthly PTC and PTC Board meetings and participate in the board discussions and decisions
  • Attend Volunteer Orientation in the fall and Kindergarten Orientation in the spring
2019 – 2020 Committee Chairs

To date, we know we need new Committee Chairs for the events below:

  • Field Day – you would have an opportunity to shadow this year’s chair at the event on Friday, June 7th.
  • Back to School Night – help organize the festivities as families come to school to drop off supplies and meet their teachers.

Learn more on the Volunteer Page.

Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Rick Collett, at volunteers@terralindaptc.org if you need further information

Makerspace: UPDATE

Special thanks to our technology assistant Nicole Jackson, and parent volunteers, Kelly Olson, John Schaeffer, Gavin Redshaw.

The Makerspace is finally up and running!

Mrs. Batsell introduced the area to the staff during a staff meeting last Tuesday and later in the week Terra Linda’s, SALT Lego Robotics team presented their project and demonstrated their robot on the Makerspace’s own Lego robotics field table.

The room has craft supplies as well as STEM learning tools, so children should be able to use the space for everything from expressing their creativity by making things like greeting cards, to programming robots or making videos.

This is an evolving project and we are so excited to be able to bring this resource to your children.

Jog-A-Thon Corporate Sponsorships

If you have not completed your paperwork to receive corporate matching for any 2018 donations to the PTC (Jog-A-Thon or otherwise) please take the time to do that ASAP. It is easy money that helps all our students.  Questions?  email: vpfundraising@terralindaptc.org

Next Event: Cornell Pizzicato 1/15/19 from 11AM-9PM.

If you are unable to attend that day, you can pre-order gift card purchases through Becky Seppala by emailing your requested amount by 1/10/19. The gift cards will be distributed following the event. They have also offered to include any corporate orders throughout the day purchased at ANY Pizzicato location. If this is something you’re interested in, please contact Becky.

ALSO… Pizzicato will be choosing one of our student’s recipe creations for their “special” pizza that day to honor Terra Linda.  Please have your child complete the Budding Chef Recipe Form and send by 1/7/19 if they are interested.  The winner will be announced before the event. Any inquiries or email submissions regarding this event may be sent to beckyseppala@gmail.com.

Fall Book Fair Update

Our fall Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success!

Thank you to all those who purchased books and especially those who donated books to classrooms. Also, a huge thank you to all those who volunteered at the fair.

Book fairs cannot happen without an army of volunteers!

We had sales of just over $6,000 (!) which means we get $3,315 back in Scholastic Dollars, which we use to purchase books from Scholastic. This allowed us to purchase books for the library and the remaining books the teachers picked out for their classrooms. Again, thank you! Your support of the Book Fair made this investment in Terra Linda possible.

Our next Scholastic Book Fair will be January 29 – February 1.

Cedar Mill Taekwondo

It’s not too late to sign up for this introductory class at Cedar Mill Taekwondo!

Classes start on Oct. 29th

Sign up your child for 3 weeks of class and the entire registration fee of $49, which includes uniform and belt, will be donated directly to your TERRA LINDA PTC.

Register online

PTC Meeting

Join us at the upcoming PTC meeting on Tues. Nov 6!

We will be sharing critical tips for ensuring your student’s academic success based on research from Columbia University. Also, learn what we are doing at Terra Linda to grow our readers and writers.

Running ClubRunning Club

Running Club will be presenting ribbons and medals at the assembly for everyone that has completed a half marathon or a full marathon!

Did you know that we count every lap your child runs at Terra Linda?  Reminder you child to report laps ran during brain breaks, PE, and during recess.  We also count races!  So if your child has run a fun run, we will record those miles too!

Option Schools Information Night

Terra Linda will host an Options Information Night on Thursday, November 1 at 6:30 in our Cafeteria. This information is important for 4th and 5th Grade parents and students. However, all Terra Linda families are welcome. Much like looking at colleges in your junior and senior year of high school, it is important to think ahead.

Applications for the 2019-2020 school year will be available starting Monday, October 15, 2018. Students may only select one option on their application, so do some early investigation of the options online.

Applications must be received no later than Friday, December 7, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. (PST).

In addition to Terra Linda’s information night, the District will be holding open houses. Please see the Open House schedule for details.

OBOBOBOB
