Tooth Taxi
Monday (Oct. 2) – Friday (Oct. 6) – times TBD
New this year! The Tooth Taxi is a 38 foot state-of-the-art dental office on wheels that visits schools throughout Oregon to provide free dental care and oral health education to uninsured and underserved children.
We need two volunteers on the first day and one on the other days. We do not have appointment times yet, but if you know you will be available on one of the days, please click on the link above and then click Sign Up. We will contact you when we know the appointment times.

Running Club – new times
Help students get out and run on the new track on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:45 – 11:45am and 11:45 – 12:30pm.
10:45-11:45am (Kindergarten/ First Grade/ Second Grade)
11:45-12:30pm (Fifth Grade/ Fourth Grade)

Library Volunteers Do you want to help re-shelf books and help students check out books? There are many shifts available with flexible options!

Passport Club Are you interested in quizzing students on their geography facts? It’s a great way to meet students and it’s only one day a month with flexible shifts.

PTC Club and Event Happenings:

Yesterday, the Jog-A-Thon committee hosted a Pep Rally! There was cheering, dancing and a lot excitement in that gym. Not only were these volunteers excited but so was their hair.

When the students heard that if they reach their fundraising goal of $30,000, Mrs. Batsell and Mr. Young would be silly stringed in front of the whole school the entire crowd of students roared with excitment!

Let’s do this TIGERS!!

Jog-A-Thon: Our 3rd Annual Terra Linda Jog-A-Thon is fast approaching. Packets containing all pertinent information are coming home with students today. Jog-A-Thon is Terra Linda’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The money we raise together helps buy books for our library and classrooms, supports classroom enrichment, funds fun community-building events, and so much more. Running Club: Running Club took to the track the second week of school with 163 students participating on the first day. Seven students ran more than a mile and all together Running Club logged 71 miles!
Running Club is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch recess. Every student at Terra Linda is a member and can choose to participate at any time. Runners can earn awards for reaching milestones, such as a wristband for completing their first mile and a token and chain when they finish a 5k (3 miles).
We are always looking for more volunteers. As a volunteer you can pass out mileage cards, mark laps, and give high fives!

OBOB: Love to read? Want to discover new books? OBOB is a reading competition for third-fifth grade students. Students create teams of four members and read sixteen books.
There will be monthly school wide meetings from October to February and a final competition in late February. More information, including the book list, can be found here:

Coding Club: Coding Club will be returning to the computer lab this October. Details such as dates and how you can join this club will be coming soon.
Coding Club introduces basic coding skills to twenty fourth and fifth grade students. These workshops are taught by volunteer IT professionals.

Lunch Helpers: Now through Friday, September 22 (11:10 – 11:40am each day). It takes a while for the 1st-grade and Kindergarten students to settle into the routine, and many need help opening items in their lunches and reminders to eat quickly.
Read to Me (Kindergarten): Volunteer for a 30-minute shift to read picture books to Kindergarten students. Must be trained first. Contact Kristine Edmunds to setup a short training session or ask any questions (kristine_edmunds@beaverton.k12.or.us).

Dining for Dollars: The Cedar Mill Laughing Planet Cafe is very excited about hosting our first Dining for Dollars event of the year! They will graciously be donating 15% of the entire day’s sales to Terra Linda on Tuesday, Sept. 26 from 11am-9pm. See you there!

Did you know?

In 2016-2017, we logged 4,336 volunteer hours at Terra Linda. That’s the equivilent of nearly 3 full-time positions! THANK YOU to all our committed volunteers who helped make that happen! You make Terra Linda great!
This past Tuesday 42% of Terra Linda students chose to participate in Running Club during their lunch recess. They ran a total of 71 miles IN ONE DAY! Way to go Tigers!

Becky Seppala

There are so many ways to contribute your time and talent at Terra Linda Elementary. We have parents, grandparents and community members that volunteer in many capacities.

This year, we want to highlight a few volunteers. Our hope is that you will see that any amount of time and talent that you are able to contribute can make a huge impact in your community.

Becky Seppala is a mom of four children and a dentist. In her spare time, I imagine her hiding in a closet and binge watching reruns of 90210 on an iPad.

But let’s be honest, she’s probably unpacking their newly remodeled house, running kiddos to sports, cleaning up Goldfish crackers all while bringing laughter to everyone who comes across her path. We really aren’t sure how she does it all!

An Interview With A Volunteer // Q&A with : Becky Seppala

Can you tell us a little about the activity for which you volunteer?

“I am the Dining for Dollars committee chair; dining for dollars is a way of fundraising for Terra Linda by partnering with restaurants to plan dining events for our school and local community to receive a portion of the restaurant’s profit on a certain date.”

What you do as a volunteer for Dining for Dollars?

“My main responsibilities are to select restaurants, that our community enjoys attending, that are willing to partner with TL and support our financial needs. I plan with the restaurant management staff, and coordinate with the PTC Board, to schedule events throughout the year; some involve brief applications as well. As an event approaches, I advertise within the school with posters, distribute fliers to students, and use social media to spread the word about attending the restaurant. After the event, I collect the funds raised and turn them in to the PTC treasurer.”

How does Terra Linda benefit from Dining for Dollars?

“Not only does TL benefit from the money raised, but each of the four events throughout the year help to develop a stronger sense of community between TL families and staff as they spend time together outside of school, as well as build stronger relationships with local businesses.”

Can you share a fun experience you’ve had while heading up Dining for Dollars?

“This activity is a great example of a way to get involved at TL without having to just volunteer at the school during school hours. I am able to work on coordinating events and advertising on my own time (my days off, evenings, weekends, etc). There are so many businesses that are looking to support schools financially, and they make it very easy to take advantage of these opportunities for our kids! One night that stands out was the McMenamin’s friend and family night. Following my son’s baseball game, most families from his team headed there for dinner. We showed up to see the restaurant full of other TL families, and our team ended up all sitting together in the back. It was so fun to get to know each other better in a relaxed, social setting, all while making money for TL by just eating dinner! Our crew may have been a little rowdy, but it was rewarding when I went to meet the manager to obtain the funds raised; he had nothing but compliments for our school’s support, and couldn’t wait to invite us back after the amazing turnout we had!”

Do you utilize PTC funds to organize Dining for Dollars?

“PTC doesn’t have to fund any these events—families just get to go and support!”

Track: OFFICIALLY OPEN

WE BUILT IT, AND THEY RAN!

The Terra Linda track officially opened with fanfare last Thursday evening. The two-laned track was filled with runners, walkers, and hurdlers all eager to test out the new facility. Athletes young and old competed and the results are in; the clear winner is the Terra Linda community!

With the lead of Kelly Olson, 92% of Terra Linda students participated in Running Club last year. Ivey Rich (now a 5th grader) was the only student to complete an entire marathon! Way to go, Ivey!

Please encourage your students to participate in Running Club this year. They can participate on during their lunch time recess on Tuesday and Thursdays. It should be a great experience for all!

SAVE THE DATE: BACK N’ TRACK coming soon!

You’ve probably heard the exciting news, stopped over to see the construction progress, and are now anxiously awaiting the grand opening.

Well Terra Linda Tigers, get your running shoes ready because on August 31, the wait will be over.

The Terra Linda Track is officially opening!!!

Our new track features a ¼ mile loop of all-weather rubber surface that will keep us running year-round. No more soggy sneakers! In addition to the track, the adjacent BSD baseball field received upgraded fencing and a second new fence was added to separate the school area from the neighboring housing complex. The project also includes new landscaping and tree replanting.

This track is a gift for each and every one one of us and all are welcome to use the track. We hope it promotes lifelong health and physical activity! After Terra Linda’s back to school night, we invite you to join us at the Terra Linda Track Celebration and All – Comers Meet!

Back N’ Track Schedule:

4:30-5:30 Meet your Teacher, Drop off supplies

5:15-6:30 PTC-Sponsored Picnic and Activity Fair

** FREE HOT DOG DINNER and Pizza Schmizza & Grilled Cheese Grill food carts for purchase

6:00-7:30 Track Celebration

6:00 Ribbon Cutting followed by a Play-Fit-Fun warm-up session

6:30 All – Comers Meet on the track including races for: K-5 grades, middle and high schoolers, adults, and a family relay! There will be turbo javelin throwing and training hurdle races inside the track loop

7:30 Celebration ends

Area groups including Foot Traffic, Mizuno, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Jamba Juice, and others will have information booths at the event and food carts will be available for a charge.
